About Us

In our case, Lemma is both an acronym and a symbol. It stands for Layout Engineered for Motivation, Mastery, and Application. That “Layout” is our unique online homework system.
In the world of proofs in upper math, a lemma is a smaller definition, theorem, or understanding that is key to making a bigger, more complicated proof work. In our case, education is the big, complicated thing and the lemma is the fact that students are individuals.

Vision

To cater to the diverse needs of students and the heavy burden on teachers; To provide personalized resources and responses; And to maintain exceptional usability; All by pursuing and reviewing opinions and experiences through feedback.

Timeline

Aug 19, 2023

Beginning

Abigail meets with a professor and they discuss her goals. Within an hour, they are in a room with two more professors beginning to discuss the need for this project as well as the first steps in the process.

September 2023 - July 2024

Learning

Abigail works with five professors and three students to learn more about entrepreneurship, intellectual property, business design, education trends, students' attitude towards math, and web development. Fundraising begins for the August next two work terms.

August 2024 - December 2024

Initializing

The Project Lemma team grows to include 5 professors and 7 students. Focus shifts to our informational site, planning for further construction, investigating mathematical learning and development, and building an image in the community. Fundraising continues for next term.

January 2025 - April 2025

Constructing

The team continues to grow to include 5 professors and 11 students. The programming team begins to design and code the actual educational site. Another team begins creating the educational content that will be included in this site. Research is conducted in Virginia Schools to inform the design of the site and materials. The business team researches future funding opportunities.

May 2025 - August 2025

Learning Continuing

Abigail will intensively study mathematical learning and development to continue to refine understanding of students' needs. She will also begin to investigate what implementing AI would involve and hire students for the fall term.

September 2025 - December 2025

Major Construction Ending

The Programming and Education Content teams will conclude work on major features to produce a minimum viable product (one unit in Algebra II). If there is time in this term, the programming team will begin building out the Algebra II course with other units. The business team will begin seeking out parties to test the product in the next term. The Research and Feedback teams will develop methods to gather and review user experiences.

January 2026 - March 2026

Testing & Adjusting

Testing begins and feedback will roll in. All teams will review the thoughts of evaluators and begin to edit the product to better meet the needs of the market. The Programming team continues to build out the Algebra II unit. Abigail intensively studies curriculum development and evaluation of student understanding in practice. Abigail graduates with a BS in Computational and Applied Mathematics and a BA in Leadership Studies.

April 2026 - May 2026

Committing

Based on the feedback received in the previous term and the business context of the market, a decision will be made concerning whether or not to continue committing to the vision statement and timeline. If we decide to continue, we will seek our first sale for the 2026-2027 school year. Abigail graduates with a BS in Computational and Applied Mathematics and a BA in Leadership Studies.

June 2026 - August 2026

Dotting our i's and crossing our t's

Final edits. The countdown begins!

September 2026 - June 2027

In Classrooms!

Students and teachers will begin using our site in classrooms. We will continue to support them based on their feedback. Construction on our second course begins and ends (to be offered in the '27-'28 school year).

After that...

Who knows!

We are so excited to find out what's next!
